Part 1 - General

1.01 Description of Work
The scope of this specification is intended to cover all cladding (roof and /or wall) units and required accessories shown on the drawings. This includes but is not limited to following:

  • Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) cladding (roofing and siding panels),
  • FRP trim and flashing,
  • Fasteners required to secure the panels and flashing,
  • Closures and sealants required for a complete installation.

Part 2 - Products

2.01 Materials and Finishes

Cladding units shall be Tuff Span® or an approved equal that conforms to these specifications.

2.01.01 Resin Type
Resin shall be premium grade, chemically resistant (choose one of the following) a. Isophthalic Polyester, b. Isophthalic Polyester - FM Approved, c. Vinyl Ester.
2.01.02 Glass Reinforcement
Reinforcement shall be straight and continuous, with fibers oriented in two directions (along the length and width of unit). Glass content shall be a minimum of 47% by weight.
2.01.03 Flame Spread
Cladding shall have a Class 1 flame spread rating (25 or less when tested in accordance with ASTM E-84), shall be listed by ULand bear the UL label.
2.01.04 FM Approval (optional)
Units shall be Approved by Factory Mutual for use without height restrictions in unsprinklered applications. Panels shall be Factory Mutual Approved for Class 1 fire and (I-60 or I-90, pick one) Windstorm Classifications.
2.01.05 UV Resistance
Panel material shall be made from a UV stabilized resin modified with acrylic monomers. Additional UV resistance shall come from surfacing mats and a surface coating of an acrylic polymer.
2.01.06 Color
Color as selected by Owner
2.01.07 Lengths
Use lengths as long as practical to minimize end laps. Lengths shall be as shown on drawings, maximum 45 ft. long or manufacturerÕs limitations.
2.01.08 FRP Flashing and Trim
Accessories shall be of thickness, dimensions, and profile required for a complete installation of cladding as shown on the drawings.
2.01.09 Structural Fasteners with Sealing Washers
Fasteners shall be stainless steel (300/316 series), spaced and installed per manufacturer's recommendations or the drawings.
2.01.10 Side Lap Fasteners
SB2 grommets, installed per manufacturer's specifications or the drawings.
2.01.11 Closures and Sealants
a. Sealant tape for side and end laps: 3/32 in. thick non-shrinking non-hardening butyl tape.
b. Closures: EPDM with profile to match unit profile.
c. Sealant: GE "Silpruf" silicon sealant.

2.02 Structural Parameters

2.02.01 Performance Criteria
Cladding panels shall meet the performance criteria described below for the spans indicated on the drawings. Product compliance with criteria shall be established by full-scale tests for positive and negative loading per ASTM Test Method E-72.
2.02.02 Loads
Roofing:
_______ p.s.f. positive wind
_______ p.s.f. negative wind
_______ p.s.f. live load
Siding:
_______ p.s.f. positive wind
_______ p.s.f. negative wind
2.02.03 Allowable Deflections
Roofing:
L/D = ___________
Siding: L/D = ___________
2.02.04 Factors of Safety
Roofing
Live loads: FOS = 2.5
Wind uplift loads: FOS = 1.88
Siding
Wind loads: FOS = 1.88

Part 3 - Execution

3.01 Handling and Storage

3.01.01 Handling
Protect the surface of FRP cladding units from cuts, scratches, gouges, abrasions, and impacts. Do not use wire slings unless material is fully protected. Use spreader bars when lifting FRP.

3.01.02 Storage
Store panels under cover. Keep panels dry. Stack panels off ground with one end elevated to permit draining of incidental water which can permanently stain panels.

3.02 Installation of FRP Cladding

3.02.01 Installation Instructions
Installer must follow manufacturer's installation instructions and the shop drawings.
3.02.02 Pilot Holes in Panels
Pilot holes must be drilled in panels for all fasteners. Drill holes with a sharp carbide tipped sheeter's bit. Pilot holes in panels should be sized so that the fastener threads just clear the edges of the hole.
3.02.03 Pilot Holes in Supports
Pilot holes must be drilled in supports for Type A and B stainless steel self-tapping screws (not required with SFS Stadler stainless self-drilling screws) at drill speeds of 500 RPM or less. Pilot holes in supports should be sized as recommended by the panel or fastener manufacturer.
3.02.04 Driving Fasteners
Stainless steel screws driven into hot-rolled members must be driven at 500 RPM or less to avoid thread rolling.
3.02.04 End Laps
End laps for roofing panels shall be 6 inches minimum. End laps for siding panels shall be 4 inches minimum.
