The National Resources Defense Council has called per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) “forever chemicals” because they are “nearly indestructible.” They are toxic even in parts per quadrillion levels.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced its final National Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NPDWR) for six PFAS chemicals on April 10, 2024. According to the NPDWR, “the rule will prevent PFAS exposure in drinking water for approximately 100 million people, prevent thousands of deaths, and reduce tens of thousands of serious PFAS-attributable illnesses.” The rule will require the monitoring of public water for these PFAS.
The California Water Board explains that four major sources allow PFAS to get into water: landfill leaching, fire training and response sites, wastewater treatment plants and industrial sites. Additionally, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a common corrosive challenge for plant operations given it often transitions to sulfuric acid (H2SO4).
